Since 1996 Up & Coming Weekly (www.upandcomingweekly.com) has been Fayetteville, Cumberland County and Fort Bragg’s leading and trusted free weekly community newspaper. The tabloid style weekly provides a variety of local news, views, art and entertainment venues for the local community while providing area businesses and organizations an effective, dependable, professional and inexpensive media marketing, advertising and branding vehicle.
Up & Coming Weekly’s mission and main focus is on accentuating and illuminating the “quality of life” enjoyed here in the Fayetteville/Cumberland County area. As a trusted weekly alternative, U&CW’s goal is not to be a center of controversy or negativity, but rather to bring forth a publicly accessible and open forum for reporting news, events and important local issues that affect the community and the lives of its residents. This focus keeps the content fresh, relevant and exciting. It also keeps the readers coming back to it week after week.
Up & Coming Weekly is one of four publications created by the parent company F&B Publications. The others: Kidsville News! (www.kidsvillenews.com/cumberland) , 2011 Pocketguide (www.upandcomingweekly.com) and Primelife Magazine were all conceived and created by owner and publisher, Bill Bowman. These products are referred to as “publications of purpose,” meaning that if there was not a need (or purpose) for them in the community they would not exist. Bowman started the company by purchasing the naming rights of a bankrupt magazine in 1996 and executing an idea that was nine years in the making. He has since grown and developed the company into an effective, profitable and well respected media company serving the Fayetteville, Cumberland and Ft. Bragg communities. Up & Coming Weekly is a highly recognized, respected and award-winning publication that holds membership in the North Carolina Press Association, Southeastern Advertising Publishers Association, Association of Free Community Papers and Independent Free Papers of America. Bowman has served as a board member for each of these industry associations.
Up & Coming Weekly exclusively serves the Fayetteville/Cumberland County and Fort Bragg communities. With more than 310,000 area residents, the city and county are in a constant flux of resident turnover due to our neighbors at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. The revitalization of the city’s historical downtown district is creating ongoing interest in the development of downtown Fayetteville. It is becoming a destination point for shoppers, diners, art and antique lovers as well as businesses and organizations that enjoy urban settings and lifestyles. Fort Bragg, home of the 82nd Airborne Division and United States Army Special Operations Command, is one of the largest military posts in the United States with some 56,000 active duty soldiers assigned to the base along with their families. The base continues to grow, and due to BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) the United States Army Forces Command, or FORSCOM, is slated to complete its move to the area in 2011. FORSCOM will bring thousands of additional troops, high ranking officers, businesses, civilian jobs and contractors to the area. This growth will have a significant impact on the local community and economy. Twenty five percent of Up & Coming Weekly newspapers are distributed to Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base and Spring Lake. It is the source that soldiers turn to and trust for information about events and happenings in the Fayetteville/Cumberland County community.
